Here's apparatus

Hare,s apparatus
It is used to measure the relative density of liquids. The of liquids. The liquids may or may not be miscible in water as they do not come in contact with each otherIt is consists of an inverted U-tube mounted on a vertical stand .It has an opening at the top end which is connected to a rubber tube with a pinch cock.
The two arms of the tube are immersed inside two beaker one containing water and the other containing the liquids whose specific gravity is to be measured.Initially ,the level of the water and the liquid column in tube are measured .let them h1 and h2 respectively.

The top surface of both liquid the U tube experience the same pressure 'p'.
The pressure acting on the surface of liquid inside the beakers is atmosphere pressure ,p0.let d1 and d2 be density of water and liquid respectively .
Therefore p0-h1d1g=p-->p0-p---------(1)
P0-h2d2g=p---->h2d2g=p0-p------------(2)
Therefore h1d1g=h2d2g
h1/h2=d2/d1
Therefore therefore R.D=h1/h2
Thus ,the relative density of given liquid=ratio of the height of the water column to the height of the liquid column.
